SAU draws on the road with ranked Ravens
The Fighting Bees move to 1-2-1 on the season after a draw in Atchison, Kan. with No. 25 Benedictine. After conceding an early goal, SAU upped the pressure to net a second-half header to tie the game at 1-1. St. Ambrose would play stellar defense while creating some offensive chances but nothing would fall as the game winner for the Bees.
St. Ambrose was caught on their heels early in the match as the Raven's offense took over. At the 2:01 mark in the first-half, the Raven's found themselves ahead 1-0 after a goal from Lizzy Gresch to give the home team momentum.
Malu Garuba Coelho would give the Bees a good opportunity after what would look like an upper ninety but the ball would creep just over the crossbar to remain scoreless. Not long after, Abigail Goff would have a look at net to force the Raven's goalie into a save. St. Ambrose and Benedictine would exchange shots to end the first with the Bees still down 1-0.
The second half looked much different, the Bees would put the Raven's on their heels. SAU rattled off two back-to-back shots on net. With the ball in the Bee's offensive third, SAU would get a quality look from Charlise Martel but nothing to come of it.
With pressure from the visiting team, the Raven's would be forced to concede a corner kick. A Kaitlyn Brunson corner kick was floated high into the box where an unmarked Nuria Montouto would flick into the back post for the tying score of the day. With this goal, it would be Montouto's first goal in a Bee uniform.
Things would stay quite shortly after the goal until Benedictine would rally for a shot and corner kick to threaten. Late in the match, Abigail Goff soared one towards the net to cause a save from the Raven's goalie. This would be the last chance for the Bees as the game ended 1-1.
St. Ambrose totaled nine shots and had the edge with three corner kicks in the match.
Montouto tallied the lone goal for the Bees as Brunson picked up the assist.
Grace Kuchar owned two saves on three shots.
Next up, SAU hits the road as they take on the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. this upcoming Wed., Sep. 4.
