Lady Cougars Come Up Big in Conference Win at Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (11-7, 4-5) traveled to Winona Lake, Indiana, and took home a 75-64 conference win over the Lancers of Grace College (9-10, 2-7) on Saturday, January 18. 

Grace took an early lead, going up 11-6 with two minutes left in the first quarter. MVNU started slow on offense and shot just 25% in the first quarter. After one, MVNU saw itself down 8-16. 

Angela Roshak, who was dominant in the paint throughout the game, helped set the tone for the Lady Cougars in the second quarter. Roshak began to establish herself down low and scored 10 points in the quarter. Along with Roshak's presence inside, MVNU began to tighten up defensively, holding Grace to just 30% from the floor in the period. With Roshak leading the charge with 16 points and eight rebounds, MVNU led 33-27 at halftime. 

As the second half began, MVNU inched ahead 38-31 after an Emily Walker three. The Lancers responded with a 7-0 run and eventually took a 43-41 lead after a made layup with 3:25 to play in the third. Trailing 41-45, MVNU got a much-needed and-one from Serenitee Johnson who scored and hit the free throw after being fouled on the shot. Two more baskets from Johnson followed by a Teresa Maggio three gave MVNU a 51-48 lead. After three, MVNU led 54-50. 

In the final 10 minutes, MVNU didn't back down and slowly stretched its lead to 10 with 3:42 remaining in the game. Maggio was huge in the game's final minutes as she scored 12 points in the quarter. The Lady Cougars held on for the win, defeating the hosts 75-64.

MVNU shot 45.6% overall and was 40.9% (9-22) from deep.  

MVNU outrebounded Grace 33-28. 

MVNU took advantage of turnovers, scoring 23 points off the 22 Lancer miscues.

Maggio - 22 points (9-19 FG, 4-7 3PT), 5 assists, 4 steals, 3 rebounds. 

Johnson - 14 points (5-14 FG, 1-3 3PT, 3-3 FT), 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks, 1 assist. 

Katie Sprang - 7 points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal.  

Walker – 6 points (2-5 3PT), 8 assists. 1 block, 1 rebound. 

 

What's Next 

The Lady Cougars will return to Ariel Arena for a game against Clark State College in a non- league matchup on January 20 at 4:00 p.m.
