Eagles Battle To 1-1 Draw With Pomeroys

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – On Saturday afternoon, the Midway University women's soccer team opened its River States Conference campaign when it faced off against St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.). Thanks to a 68th minute goal by Haylee Applegate (Flemingsburg, Ky.), the Eagles picked up a 1-1 draw on the road.

With the draw, Midway has earned a 2-2-2 record overall and 0-0-1 in the RSC for the year while the Pomeroy's stand at 1-3-2 and a conference mark of 0-1-1.

The hosts got on the board in the 13th minute when a perfect cross was met with a fantastic volley that was able to beat Eagles keeper Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.). While Midway was able to keep the pressure on the Pomeroys, the Eagles could not find the back of the net in the first half and entered intermission trailing 1-0.

In the second stanza, Midway continued shooting and received the goal it was looking for when Applegate scored in the 68th minute to even the game at a goal apiece off an assist from Mariana Casey (Georgetown, Ky.). While the offense continued with their best efforts, the Eagles could not find a second goal and the game ended as a 1-1 draw.

For the game, Midway outshot the Pomeroys 22-8 and was led by Applegate's team-leading fourth goal of the season.  In goal, Shalash recorded two saves while earning the draw.

Midway women's soccer will return to action on Thursday, September 29 when it hosts West Virginia Tech. Opening kickoff with the Golden Bears is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Midway Soccer Field.
